To finance his college needs, he once traded in college books, photocopying and t-shirt making services. He also once established a medical equipment shop and laboratory in the Senen area, Central Jakarta even though he eventually went bankrupt. He also tried his luck by doing business in the contractor field. In a relatively short time Chairul received an order to build a chopstick factory. However, in the middle of the road the orderman experienced financial difficulties which left the project dormant. Even though for this project, Chairul is willing to sell his car. This failure made him have to be willing to go up and down the bus. In his unfavorable condition, he remained persistent in working and completing his college, he even received an award as a National Level Exemplary Student in 1984-1985.
